What is Slack?
Slack is a communication application that provides countless team services including real-time messaging, archiving, and search. Endeavor uses Slack to communicate and share information and collaborate across offices, long distances and time zones.
Why do we use Slack?
- Correspond easily across offices and get the answers that you need from Endeavor staff around the world - ask questions, share and learn about best practices, and leverage the #OneEndeavor expertise that you have at your fingertips.
- Stay up to date on important deadlines, program details, and EE- and staff-facing information and activities -- Endeavor staff around the world share critical information on Slack to reach everyone in the organization at once. Stay privy to Slack activity so that you never miss an important announcement!
- Transparent, open communication -- organize your team conversations in open channels, private groups, or direct messages to streamline communication, share resources, and build a community. You can also quickly video or phone chat directly on the platform.
- All your tools in one place - avoid constant switching between apps by keeping all of your internal communications in one place. Slack messages and files are archived searchable so you’ll never lose important historical data.
Expectations and Guiding Principles
- Check Slack every workday to make sure that you don’t miss important updates, announcements, and program deadlines. It should only take you 10 minutes (maximum) to get caught up on your new messages each day. We also share the monthly Endeavor Bulletin (staff newsletter) at the start of every month on Slack!
- Be a part of the conversation. Share best practices and answer other staff members’ questions when you know the answer (even if someone else has already responded -- the more answers the merrier!), and be sure to “react” to posts with an emoji to show you’ve seen and understood a post as well.
- Download the Slack desktop app to seamlessly incorporate Slack into your work day. You can control your notifications in Setting (outlined below). The Slack app is also available for iOS and Android. These apps all allow you to easily switch between the OneEndeavor Slack and your office’s team Slack workspaces.
Slack Hacks: Use Slack to the Fullest!
- Directory: Click the “...” in the top right corner of your Slack window and select “Workspace Directory” to access a complete searchable list of Endeavor staff. Please make sure that your own profile is up to date so that your directory information is accurate!
- Status and Out of Office Notifications: You can set your status in Slack so teammates know where you’re going or what you’re up to. Choose from five default statuses for common scenarios or create your own. To update your status, click your name in the upper left hand corner, then select “Set a status” and add text and/or an emoji. This is a great tool for when you’re out of office and can’t be reached.
- File Sharing and Searching: You can upload, share, link, and store files right on Slack. There are several easy ways to upload a file from your computer:
- Drag and drop the file to the Slack window.
- Copy and paste images directly into the message box.
